Former Legislator Dies in Florida

Word has been received and passed along by Tom Houck that former Georgia legislator, Gerald Talmadge Horton, died at his home in Jacksonville on Wednesday after a brief battle with cancer. He was 74. Horton was elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1968 and served as an at-large representative from Fulton County. He chaired the powerful Committee on Industry and was vice-chairman of the Committee on State Planning & Community Affairs. After his accomplished career in public office, Horton turned his focus to business as Senior Vice President at the Georgia Power from 1979-1985, He then moved to New York City as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ogilvy& Mather Public Relations Group. Horton is survived by his wife Kathryn Birmingham of Jacksonville and three children. The family is planning memorial services in Jacksonville and Atlanta in late November.
