Saying “The people of Georgia needto know I am all in for the governor’s race,” Secretary of State Karen Handel, after only three years in office, is resigning the position. Handel says she is resigning to steer clear of anhy potential accusations that she is using her office to benefit the campaign. Governor Sonny Perdue will get to appoint her replacement as Secretary of State. Handel is expected to have support from Governor Perdue in her race for Governor. However she is one of seven in the race and recent political polls have show her way behind Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine. Oxendine has shown no inclination to resign his current positiion while campaigning for governor. Max Cleland, a Democrat, has been the only Secretary of State to move on to higher office and he did so after resigning that office in order to run for U.S. Senate. Senator Eric Johnson of Savannah also resigned his senate job in order to devote full time to the race for governor.
