Update: Dawson Mathis had a pacemaker implanted on Wednesday after there was a heart rhythm problem following his lung sugery. His wife, Cathy Jo, says it is hoped that the former congressman can be home prior to the 4th of July. He went to Nashville Saturday.
Former Albany Television Anchor and five term U.S. Congressman Dawson Mathis underwent five hour surgery in Macon Tuesday for removal of a cancerous lung. Mathis was reported to have come through the surgery and was doing well in the recovery room.
Friends had noticed that the former congressman had been losing weight and generally looking “bad” in recent weeks. Two weeks ago tests spotted problems with his lungs and immediate surgery was recommended.
Mathis, had been a constant smoker through the years and had only recently quit.
His surgeon at the Medical Center of Central Georgia said that Mathis would be in the hospital for about six to nine days, but full recovery is expected.
