Statement of Former Senator Sam Nunn About Death of Martha Tate

Senator Sam Nunn issued the following statement this morning after learning of the death of Martha Tate.
“Colleen and I are very saddened to learn of Martha’sdeath. When she agreed to become my staff assistant, I was an inexperienced beginner in Washington. Her quiet, modest, but keen insignts and her experience, wise advice, unfailing thoughtfulness and cheerfulness were invaluable to me as a new senator and were also very beneficial to the citizens of Georgia. I remember once in my early Senate days when Martha observed the front office and quietly informed our inexperienced receptionist that the gentleman who had been waiting for me for 20 minutes was the Secretary of Defense. This was only once occasion of many where she got us out of — and kept us out of — serious difficulties and errors.
From the very beginning of my years of friendship with Martha, I never heard anyone say “I like Martha Tate” It was always “I love Martha Tate”. All of the Nunn’s loved Martha and are praying for her family during this difficult time.”
