Joe Sports is a veteran political leader, former newspaper and television reporter, congressional assistant and one of the state's most experienced public affairs consultants.
Personal Background
A native of Douglas, Coffee County, Georgia, Joe is son of the late Mr. & Mrs. E. W. Sports. He is married to the former Dee Plymell of Thomasville and they have one daughter, Susan (she keeps the last name of Sports and serves as public information officer for the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety), and two grandsons, Ali Joseph and Amir Elias.. Sports studied business, public relations, and broadcasting at South Georgia College, Douglas, American University in Washington and the Armed Forces Institute.
Business Background
With a unique combination of communications skills, Joe Sports was associate editor of The Douglas Enterprise and news/promotion director of WALB-TV, Albany, Georgia.
He was executive director of the Democratic Party of Georgia during the administrations of two governors, and three state chairmen -- and was succeeded in this position by Zell Miller, former Governor of Georgia and U.S. Senator. He was administrative assistant to U.S. Senator David Gambrell, and was an aide to four Georgia congressmen -- Iris Blitch, Bill Stuckey, Billy Evans and Dawson Mathis. He began his governmental affairs firm over 25 years ago.
