While Fortson was often urged to run for Governor, he said he had the best job in Georgia as Secretary of State. Georgia's New U. S.Senator, David Gambrell, left, was greeted at the U.S. Capitol by then Governor Jimmy Carter, while Senior Senator Herman Talmadge observed. It was 1971 shortly after the death of Senator Richard Russell. Gambrell served with distinction but lost in the Democratic Primary the following year to Sam Nunn of Perry, GA.
